Forge Motorsports have finally released their anticipated intercooler upgrade kit for the Nissan GT-R. The upgrade turns the tables on the conventional GT-R intercooler design. Instead of two cores side by side this uses one long tube and fin core above another in a single long unit. The core size is 740mmx250mmx100mm. The benefits of this design are a greater overall volume and reduced pressure loss versus the standard intercooler. Overall the whole setup actually works out lighter than standard also with around 0.9kg shaved off the cooler and pipework setup.
In terms of performance improvement, Forge Motorsports noticed more area under the curve when dynoing this against a stock intercooler with improved cooling as well. With the standard cooler air intake temps were around the 43 degree C mark, with the Forge Motorsport cooler this dropped to 32 degrees C.
Everything you need for installation is included in the kit at just £1,800 GBP plus shipping. For UK residents that price is minus VAT.
Thanks to Ben @ GTC-R for the tip off.

After just the right amount of anticipation, Tomei has joined the Nissan GT-R camshaft party with their own range of upgrades under the Poncam brand. Well respected in the tuning world forever, the Poncams are a drop in replacement for the standard items.
On the intake side, the Poncams increase duration to 256° and lift to 10.2mm with a initial lobe center angle of 124°. On the exhaust side the cams feature a 264° duration and 10.5mm of lift. Initial lobe center angle on the exhaust side is 115°. In comparison stock ones are 238°, 9.56mm intake and 248°, 9.88mm exhaust.
For now, there’s just one spec of Poncams for the VR38DETT, but at 134,400 yen in Japan for the full set they’re priced competitively. You can also opt for just the in or ex set for 67,200 yen a pop.
Tomei have a big showing planned for Tokyo AutoSalon 2010 which begins later this month (15th – 17th Jan) so we’ll be sure to snap a few photos of the cams in the flesh.

With all the big horsepower GT-Rs in the works it’s good to know someone is thinking about upgrades in head of these beastly VR38s. AAM have sourced these heavy duty intake and exhaust valves from Ferrea.
On the exhaust side, they’re built from Ferrea’s Nimonic90 Super Alloy which should be able to handle the heat even in the most extreme VR38 builds.
Intake wise, AAM selected the Ferrea Competition Plus Alloy valves as a solid upgrade over the standard items.
If you’re looking at a huge build, it might be something to think about and give Clint a call at AAM…

HKS continue to come up with some new ideas in the R35 GT-R parts business, especially this week in the intake air cooling arena where suprisingly few companies have succesfully ventured so far. Perhaps the standard cooling solution is difficult to improve upon? Either way the HKS Intercooler Kit for the Nissan GT-R is a shift in the right direction I feel.
What HKS has done is ditched the standard intake air guide/ducting system and replaced it with their own carbon version. This allows them to choose a longer core (400×260) and gain important surface area in doing so. Available surface area in an intercooler can mean more efficient cooling but in this case HKS went with a thinner core (65mm) to do so. What you usually end up with when doing this is an increase in pressure drop across the intercooler but, this is something that HKS have thought of in advance and they’ve tried to design this away with a new inner fin design. The thin core design also helps in lessening the effect of blocking airflow to the radiator.
The HKS Intercoolers offer all this and at a lower weight as well losing 1.6kg over the standard items. There’s no pricing as yet but we’ll let you know when we find out around January 2010.

COBB are choosing a fine time to launch a new reasonably priced GT-R product, just in time for Christmas? Maybe it wont make it in time to find it’s way under your tree this year but check it out.
This full silicon hose and clamp kit does away with your stock plastic and rubber hoses. The strong 4-ply and 5-ply silicon items are far more durable, heat resistant and resistant to expansion under boost than the OEM type so makes a sensible upgrade.
The clamps included are the T-bolt kind and are superior to the standard hose clamps albeit costlier, probably why OEMs stick with the vanilla flavor. Some may have seen from experience though that with more power than stock the GT-R likes to pop off an intake pipe occasionally.
Available in blue and black colors, the set retails at $695.
While you’re here, if you haven’t seen it yet, why not check out the interview with Trey Cobb at the Seibon booth from SEMA earlier this year embedded below.
