VIP Petfoods Nissan GT-R Outright 5th in Dunlop Targa NZ

Tarmac rallies aren’t usually the natural stomping ground for a car weighing just this side of 4000 pounds but you don’t see that stopping the Nissan GT-R from excelling at it. All last week and over the weekend, over 130 teams were attacking the roads of the North Island of New Zealand in the annual Targa New Zealand.

Tony Quinn and his brand new VIP Petfoods Nissan R35 GT-R managed a 5th position outright finish after some exciting racing in the treacherous, wet conditions. (video link)

This finish in a basic standard (but obviously targa prepared) GT-R backs up recent tarmac rally results in Australia where Nissan GT-Rs finished 5th and 9th in the Tasmanian Tarmac Challenge and outright first in the Quit Targa West.

    Good stuff but what in the GTR is so heavy? This car is 2-300kg heavier than it should.

    probably all the gadgets, computers, the rear seats, the four-wheel drive, etc. etc. Compare it to like the Porsche GT2, which is stripped down to the bare metal to make it so light. Not even sound-proof. Hehe

    R34 is leading the Targa again this year, two fingers to all the Porsches and Scoobies :)

    haha yeah, McAndrew in the R34 GT-R just gets pipped for first place after winning the event five years in a row. What a bummer.

    Would have been ok if it was the R35 beating him but a lowly STi…. pfft!

    I guess that full time 4WD would be a lot more useful than the GT-Rs ATTESSA in the wet.

    In my experience the ATTESSA is a lot less confidence inspiring around a bend in the wet.
